6th Graders Using Edmodo at The Adelson School
The middle school students at The Adelson Educational Campus are using Edmodo, an educational blogging site, daily. Upon entering the room, they know immediately to get their assigned laptops, log on to their individual accounts, and respond to the blog prompt.
Today, the 7th grade prompt reads, “If you could fly, where would you go? What would you do?” in preparation for the start of their most recently assigned novel, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
The 6th graders are taking a look at a picture taken during the Dust Bowl. They must assume the voice of the character, write from her point of view, and include the following: What is happening? What is she thinking/feeling? Why?
Blogging has created an atmosphere of excitement that is unparalleled. Students enter the room, eager to read, write, reflect, and respond. It teaches each student how to respond concisely and thoughtfully in writing, to differ in opinion respectfully, to read for main points and respond appropriately, and to edit work with a more critical eye. Blogging has endless benefits.

I am glad to see that someone has embraced blogging. I have many students who can’t appropriately place their name in an iPod app without being profane. I have been terrified of blogging with them. Great job venturing into such an open area!

We have used the Ning website to get our kids to blog, discuss and post assignments and also just to have a place for the kids to go and look through different things. I think it is a great idea and it is amazing how quickly they get to work on their assignments.

Oh wow! That is amazing what you have taught your students to do. I just recently set up my own blogging page over the weekend only to find out that the school blocks that webpage that I have created. I love your idea about having students get started by writing about what they will soon be reading about. I have been doing that since the beginning of this school year; except, that my students have been writing in journals which are clumpy and time consuming to grade. I cant wait to do what you are doing with your students next year once all procedures are put into place. How is grading their work through blogging though, I’m very curious.

Sounds interesting! How much time do you devote each class period to blogging? Is it the warmup for class?

Edmodo is the best. I love being able to give each student a copy of the assignment with out have to make one single copy. It is fantastic. And the kids love to chat. And I love that I can supervise it.

I like your blog prompts. Is your blog linked to this one? I’d love to read the posts. Would be willing to share your ideas?

That is a fantastic warm up! Great way to grab their attention from the minute they walk in the door!

I set up an account and have used it with one of my classes as a trial. I love it! I especially love the feature that allows me to delete and control what is posted. I have found that my kids will ask questions and before I get a chance to check, other students have answered them. They even find appropriate websites that relate to what we are learning in class and post them. It’s great!

I work with Maria and she does an excellent job with Edmodo and our students. While considering using Edmodo in my social science classes. our students described how interesting and easy it was to use in class. With Maria’s help, I also implemented Edmodo into my classes and curriculum. Keep up the good work Maria and let’s continue sharing ideas.
